World's Tallest Structure, Installing Ecoglo ®

Architects picked Ecoglo to guide people to safety during power outages

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (June 2008) – When it’s completed in December, the Burj Dubai skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), will be the world’s tallest manmade structure and could well take its rightful place among the modern Wonders of the World.

Although the final height and number of floors of Burj Dubai are being kept a guarded secret until the massive project is completed, the majestic tower is expected to reach a height of more than 700 meters (2,297 feet), with at least 160 floors of residential, commercial and retail space.

As it nears completion, Burj Dubai is setting one impressive record after another in the construction industry. Here’s another to add to the growing list: the tallest building on Earth to use Ecoglo, the latest in emergency lighting systems, which requires no electricity while emitting a steady, highly visible green glow that guides people to safety
in any type of building.

While Burj Dubai will be equipped with some elevators programmed to permit controlled evacuation for certain fire or security situations, the Chicago architectural and engineering firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) wanted to ensure safe evacuation of the building. And that’s why approximately 12,000 linear meters (39,000 linear feet) of Ecoglo’s photoluminescent stair nosings are being installed in the building’s stairways. “SOM specified Ecoglo by name because we set the benchmark for performance and durability,” said Trevor Dimond, executive chairman for Ecoglo International. “Our products are built to be walked on by tens of thousands and provide a high margin of safety.”

Dimond explained that in order to outfit Burj Dubai with Ecoglo stair nosings “we had to modify our product to meet the custom profile required to match the geometry of the steps in the building. Everything in the magnificent tower is unique, right down to the stairs and our emergency lighting system.” Central to Ecoglo’s patented emergency lighting technology is an active photoluminescent element that is a naturally occurring rare-earth crystal, which absorbs natural or artificial light and then re-emits the light to quickly guide people to safety under any conditions.

Ecoglo products are most commonly used for supplementary emergency lighting in stairwells and aisles in theatres, stadiums and buildings of all types to provide safely lit pathways.

Unlike some competitors’ products, the technology behind Ecoglo was not adapted from novelty items or signage. Ecoglo products are built with a high-grade metal base and the high-visibility photoluminescent strip is bonded to the metal at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for long-lasting durability. They are designed to be walked on, even the signs.

Ecoglo’s built-in photoluminescent strip is made up of rare-earth crystals in a pigment that absorb light from both solar and artificial sources. The patented application process embeds the pigment in a clear, durable polymer that ensures maximum glow efficiency.

The strips quickly become charged and emit a steady green glow that will continue to glow in the event of a power outage until all the absorbed energy is exhausted. Ecoglo’s high brightness design ensures that it will be visible to people in a darkened stadium or high-rise building for hours following a blackout, allowing sufficient time for egress.

All Ecoglo products have been tested for durability in the lab and in real-life installations. Ecoglo’s hard, long-lasting finish will maintain its luminescence for the life span of most buildings, and it’s a less expensive alternative to standard emergency lighting systems.

Ecoglo emits a glow after absorbing any type of light. After charging for about 20 minutes, signs and strips will glow for hours afterward. Ecoglo serves as a reliable lighting source in the event that backup generators also fail during a power outage.
